European Energy expands Kvosted project with 200 MWh battery

European Energy has brought the Kvosted Solar and Battery Park in Viborg Municipality, Denmark, into commercial operation, integrating a 200 MWh battery energy storage system with an existing solar park operating since 2022. Described as Northern Europe’s largest combined solar-plus-storage installation by storage capacity, the project enhances grid flexibility by storing surplus solar generation and supplying power during low-output periods, supporting Denmark’s growing share of variable renewable energy.

Danish renewable energy developer, European Energy, has completed construction and commenced commercial operation of the Kvosted solar and Battery Park in Viborg Municipality, Denmark. The project combines an existing operating solar park with a newly installed 200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). 

The Kvosted solar park has been operational since 2022 and has now been expanded through the addition of utility-scale battery storage located within the solar facility. The integrated configuration allows electricity generated by the solar park to be stored on site and discharged when solar output is reduced or unavailable. The project is described as the largest combined solar and battery installation in Northern Europe based on storage capacity. The battery system provides storage equivalent to the average daily electricity use of about 18,000 households and supports grid balancing by managing short-term fluctuations in solar output. 

European Energy EPC, the group’s engineering, procurement, and construction unit, delivered the full scope of the project. This included battery installation, electrical integration with the existing solar park, grid connection works, and associated supporting infrastructure. Construction activities were completed within seven months, following coordination with suppliers, grid stakeholders, and local authorities. Following energization, the project moved into a commissioning phase focused on testing and preparing the battery systems for commercial operation. 

In Denmark, solar output can account for more than 60% of national electricity demand during periods of high solar irradiation, according to the company. As variable renewable generation increases, demand for energy storage solutions has risen to balance production variability and support electricity supply outside solar generation hours. 

The project contributes to Denmark’s expanding renewable generation by integrating large-scale battery storage with solar capacity to improve system flexibility. The Kvosted solar and Battery Park is scheduled for formal opening on 2 February 2026, with attendance by Denmark’s Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities and the Mayor of Viborg. 

Mads Lykke Andersen, Head of Technology Development at European Energy, said that the energization of Kvosted marked the start of the company’s large-scale battery storage rollout with additional capacity planned for 2026. 

Thorvald Spanggaard, EVP and Head of Project Development at European Energy, said the Kvosted project marked the initial rollout of battery systems across the company’s portfolio, with European capacity expected to exceed 1 GW by 2027.
