EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Construction has started on the 400 MWh Heinersbrück GridBattery in eastern Germany. Developed by LEAG Clean Power with Fluence, the storage project will share a grid connection with wind and solar generation and use Fluence Smartstack technology. Completion is scheduled for 2027.

Fluence Energy GmbH, a subsidiary of Fluence Energy, Inc., and LEAG Clean Power GmbH, have started deployment of the 400 MWh Heinersbrück GridBattery energy storage project in eastern Germany. The battery will be co-located with wind and solar generation assets on recultivated former mining land and is scheduled for completion in 2027.
The project is the second battery storage development being delivered jointly by LEAG Clean Power and Fluence. The companies are also deploying the 1 GW / 4 GWh GigaBattery Jänschwalde 1000 in the same region. Fluence is responsible for the design, supply and construction of both projects.
The Heinersbrück facility will use Fluence Smartstack energy storage technology. Smartstack is a modular battery storage solution designed for high-density deployment, availability and safety.
Heinersbrück will be the first LEAG Clean Power battery storage system to share a grid connection point with wind and photovoltaic generation assets. The configuration will allow surplus renewable electricity to be stored and supplied when required. LEAG said this approach is intended to improve energy system efficiency, reduce pressure on the electricity grid and strengthen security of supply.
The development forms part of LEAG Group’s wider GigawattFactory strategy. As Germany phases out coal, the company is repurposing former mining areas, existing industrial sites and energy infrastructure. Its strategy combines renewable generation, battery storage and dispatchable power plant capacity.
Thomas Brandenburg, Managing Director of LEAG Clean Power, said sharing the grid connection with wind and solar assets will allow the company to store surplus renewable electricity more flexibly. He added that the Heinersbrück and Jänschwalde developments are contributing to the creation of a battery storage cluster.
Julian Jansen, Managing Director for Germany at Fluence, said Heinersbrück follows the companies’ GigaBattery Jänschwalde 1000 development in the Lusatia region. According to Fluence, the company has contracted or deployed 35 projects in Germany with a cumulative storage capacity exceeding 6 GWh.
The Heinersbrück project is designed to support renewable energy integration while using existing and repurposed energy infrastructure in eastern Germany.
