In August 2023, Encavis initiated its first ready to build battery project in Hettstedt, having a capacity of 12MW/24MWh. This milestone was designed to add flexibility to its intermittent generation from wind and solar. In 2024, Construction began on the Hettstedt system using Rolls-Royce mtu EnergyPack technology. In 2025, Encavis with the partnership of Entrix uses AI-supported multi-market optimization of its Hettstedt storage system. Its subsidiary, Stern Energy, began providing Operation & Maintenance (O&M) services for BESS in Italy and Germany.
On 15 April 2026, Encavis commissioned a 15 MW/30 MWh battery energy storage system in Beemte Broekland, which has reached commercial operation and is now fully operational.
The BESS is configured with a storage capacity of 30 MWh and a power capacity of 15MW is designed to provide flexibility and stability in the Dutch electricity system. The system enables fast and reliable response balancing services and supports stability in power supply and demand, supporting efficient renewable integration when and where flexibility is needed.
The project is co‑located with the Encavis solar park Bloemenkamp, allowing locally generated solar power to be stored and dispatched during periods of high demand or grid stress. The system will participate in multiple flexibility markets, including Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR), aFRR, mFRR, imbalance markets, and congestion management.
The project highlights collaboration across the value chain. Developed by Green Energy Storage and delivered with Alfen as EPC contractor, the BESS combines expertise in development, engineering, and system integration. It uses CATL EnerOne+ technology, with Greenchoice acting as offtaker and market interface, supporting efficient project execution.
Mario Schirru, CEO of Encavis stated that with the Apeldoorn battery which is now operational, Encavis is expanding its capability to deliver integrated energy solutions. He also stated that combining renewable generation, battery storage, and demand-oriented market optimisation enables electricity supply when it is most needed.
This project is a milestone for Encavis as a next-generation independent power producer. It is shifting from simple generation to providing integrated energy solutions. The system utilizes CATL EnerOne+ technology and is operated in partnership with Greenchoice, that acts as the offtaker and market interface to enable efficient energy dispatch.
