Matrix Renewables and Tesla sign EPC for 500 MW/1 GWh BESS

Matrix Renewables has signed a full EPC agreement with Tesla Energy to deliver a 500 MW/1 GWh standalone battery energy storage system in Eccles, Scotland. The project marks Matrix Renewables’ first UK standalone BESS and aligns with the country’s Net Zero 2050 and Clean Power 2035 goals. Tesla will lead design, construction and commissioning. Once operational, the system will provide fast-response grid balancing and flexibility services, supporting reliability along key Scotland–England transmission corridors.

Matrix Renewables, headquartered in Madrid, has signed a full Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) agreement with Tesla for the development of a 500 MW / 1 GWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Eccles, Scotland. The project represents company’s first standalone battery energy storage project in the UK, aligned with the country’s Net Zero 2050 and Clean Power 2035 policy frameworks.

Under the full EPC agreement, Tesla’s energy division, Tesla energy will undertake the detailed design, construction, and commissioning of the battery energy storage facility in line with UK grid requirements. Once operational, the Eccles battery energy storage system is expected to provide fast-response services, including grid balancing and flexibility support, contributing to overall system reliability. All planning conditions for the Eccles site have been cleared, with full consent secured to begin construction without additional permitting requirements.

A consortium of technical advisors has been appointed to support project delivery, with Enertis Applus+ leading technical due diligence, GHD acting as Technical Advisor, and Black & Veatch serving as Owner’s Engineer. The advisory framework covers engineering oversight, construction execution, and commissioning, aligned with UK grid requirements and performance standards for large-scale battery energy storage systems.

In parallel with technical development, Matrix Renewables has entered into a collaboration agreement with the local Community Council. The agreement outlines joint initiatives aimed at delivering defined benefits to communities surrounding the project site during construction and operation.

The Eccles battery energy storage system represents Matrix Renewables’ entry into the UK market. The company has indicated plans to expand its UK pipeline across renewable generation, energy storage, and emerging technologies, with potential additions of up to 3 GW of capacity in the coming years. Matrix Renewables’ global portfolio currently totals more than 15.5 GW across renewable energy, energy storage, and green hydrogen projects in Europe, North America, and Latin America.

Sergio Arbeláez, Managing Director for Europe and LatAm at Matrix Renewables, said that the project reflects the company’s capability to deliver utility-scale storage infrastructure through established partnerships and large-scale project execution.

Mike Snyder, Energy Vice President, Tesla, said that the agreement supports Matrix Renewables’ entry into the UK by combining Tesla’s market experience with Matrix Renewables’ project development capabilities.
