Matrix Renewables advances 1 GWh BESS in Scotland

The project marks Matrix Renewables’ first standalone BESS development in the UK and one of its largest global storage assets. Spain-based renewable energy developer, Matrix Renewables has signed an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract with Tesla for a 500MW/1GWh (2-hour) Eccles standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Eccles, Scotland. The development represents the company’s first standalone BESS project in the UK market and one of its largest storage assets in Europe and globally to date. 

Under the EPC contract, Tesla is responsible for the design, equipment supply, construction, and commissioning of the battery facility. The system is expected to deploy Tesla’s grid-scale storage technology to deliver fast-response capacity capable of supporting transmission-level operations.  

All planning conditions for the Eccles site have been discharged, allowing construction to proceed under existing permits. The location lies along major Scotland–England transmission corridors, supporting multi-regional grid operations. 

The development is supported by a multi-disciplinary advisory team overseeing technical and delivery standards. Enertis Applus+ is leading the technical due diligence process, GHD is acting as Technical Advisor, and Black & Veatch has been appointed as Owner’s Engineer. These roles cover system design review, construction oversight, grid compliance, and commissioning verification throughout the project lifecycle. 

In parallel with technical development, Matrix Renewables has signed a collaboration agreement with the local Community Council covering project-related initiatives during construction and operation. 

In addition to this project, the company is progressing plans to expand its UK development pipeline across renewable generation, battery storage, and other energy technologies. Matrix Renewables has outlined plans to add up to 3 GW of additional capacity in the UK in the coming years, subject to planning approvals, grid availability, and market conditions.
