Galileo, a pan-European renewable energy developer and independent power producer (IPP), has secured consents for two battery energy storage system (BESS) projects totalling 250 MW / 1,500 MWh in Italy. The company anticipates consent for approximately another 100 MW in the coming weeks, further strengthening its battery storage development activities in the country.
The two consented projects comprise a 125 MW / 1,000 MWh facility and a 125 MW / 500 MWh facility. Located in Italy's North and Centre-South power market zones, the projects are positioned to support electricity supply-demand balancing, renewable energy integration and grid resilience.
Both projects were originated, designed and developed in-house by Galileo's Italian team. The development process covered site identification, project design and permitting through to authorisation. Galileo incorporated advanced technology and safety standards alongside responsible siting, natural screening and landscape mitigation measures to minimise environmental impacts.
Relevant authorities were engaged throughout the permitting process and provided positive assessments within their respective areas of responsibility. Galileo also consulted local municipalities from the beginning of development, with both parties agreeing on appropriate territorial compensation measures.
According to Francesco Dolzani, Managing Director for Galileo in Italy, the latest consents represent another milestone for the company's development activities. Over the past 18 months, Galileo has secured consents for more than 650 MW of solar PV and BESS projects in Italy. The company is now focusing on advancing these projects towards construction while maintaining engagement with local stakeholders.
The newly consented BESS projects form part of Galileo's diversified Italian development pipeline of more than 3 GW, covering utility-scale solar PV, battery storage, and onshore and offshore wind. Across Europe, Galileo maintains a technologically and geographically diversified renewable energy pipeline of approximately 17 GW.
Galileo co-founder and CEO Ingmar Wilhelm said the latest approvals further strengthen the company's Italian development portfolio. He also indicated that Galileo intends to begin its independent power producer activities in Italy with a selection of green energy projects in the near future.
The consented battery projects are intended to provide electricity system flexibility, support increasing renewable generation and strengthen grid reliability. Their progression towards construction forms part of Galileo's wider strategy to develop renewable energy and storage infrastructure across European electricity markets.
