Sungrow powers Nordic’s largest operational BESS in Sweden

Delta Capacity began commercial operation of a 70 MW/160 MWh battery energy storage system in Ånge, Sweden, using Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0. The project is the largest operational BESS in the Nordic region and is designed to provide reliable grid support under demanding Nordic weather conditions.

Sungrow, a China-based provider of photovoltaic (PV) inverters and battery energy storage systems (BESS), has announced that the 70 MW / 160 MWh Ånge battery energy storage project in Sweden has entered commercial operation. Developed by Delta Capacity, the project is currently the largest commissioned battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Nordic region. Sungrow supplied its PowerTitan 2.0 utility-scale BESS for the installation, which was designed to operate under Nordic weather conditions, including significant seasonal temperature variations.

The Ånge BESS is located in Sweden's bidding zone SE2 and is intended to support the country's electricity system by providing balancing services. The facility offers rapid response capabilities for frequency regulation and energy arbitrage in the Nordic electricity market. According to SolarPower Europe, Sweden's battery storage market has continued to expand as regulations have enabled battery storage systems to participate in balancing markets. Sweden and Finland together added more than 1 GWh of new battery storage capacity during 2025.

Commenting on the project, Samer Nameer, Country Manager Sweden at Sungrow, said, "Ånge is a great example of how large-scale energy storage is built in practice. Fast, at the right scale, and with the right partners like Delta Capacity. Our role is to be a long-term partner and contribute to expanding renewable energy capacity in Sweden."

The project is owned by a joint venture between WOOD & Company Renewables Sub-Fund and Delta Capacity. Delta Capacity managed the project from design through completion after acquiring it from RES in February 2025. The project reached commercial operation within 15 months from the start of procurement.

Patrik Hes, CEO of Delta Capacity, said, "The Nordic energy transition is moving fast and requires infrastructure that keeps the same pace. Sweden has great renewable resources, but flexibility is missing and that is exactly what Ånge provides. 160 MWh of storage, delivered in 15 months. Delta Capacity's goal is to keep building faster and at a greater scale. The energy transition cannot wait."

Several companies contributed to the project, including Stenger & Ibsen Construction, Rejlers, Green Power Monitor, Solvina and Ellevio, while Centrica Energy will manage electricity trading operations for the facility on a continuous basis.

Sungrow stated that it maintains an operational presence across Europe through 25 local offices, two research and development centres, and 26 warehouses. In the Nordic region, the company also highlighted its involvement in other renewable energy projects, including a 14 MW rooftop solar installation in Sweden and a 70 MW solar project in Finland. The commissioning of the Ånge BESS adds large-scale energy storage capacity to Sweden's electricity network and supports the country's increasing integration of renewable energy sources.
