Executive summary

A 5 GWh BESS manufacturing plant is to be built at Karjan in Gujarat, India, by Mecpower Solutions and Navitas Solar. Once it has begun operations in the first quarter of FY 2027-28, the plant is to supply the projects of both companies, and the remainder of its output is to be offered to other buyers.

Mecpower Solutions, an India-based renewable energy EPC company and independent power producer, is to set up a 5 GWh BESS manufacturing facility at Karjan in Gujarat, India. It will build the plant together with Navitas Solar, an India-based solar manufacturer. Production at Karjan is to start in the first quarter of FY 2027-28, the companies said on 28 October 2026.

Each partner will take on the part of the work that it knows best. Mecpower Solutions is to contribute its experience in the development, engineering and execution of renewable energy projects, while Navitas Solar is to contribute its integrated manufacturing expertise. The companies have already worked together on a number of solar and renewable energy projects, and the Karjan plant will carry that relationship into energy storage.

The facility itself has been planned as more than a production line. It is to combine manufacturing with project deployment and system integration, and it will produce battery storage systems for utility-scale, commercial and industrial renewable energy applications. A part of its output will be used in the EPC deployments and utility-scale projects of the two companies, and the remainder will be offered to the wider market.

As India continues to scale its renewable energy capacity, Battery Energy Storage Systems will be critical in addressing the intermittency of solar and wind power, improving grid flexibility, and enabling more predictable energy delivery. Our proposed 5 GWh manufacturing facility in Karjan represents a strategic step towards strengthening our capabilities across the energy storage value chain. By integrating battery storage manufacturing with our EPC and IPP businesses, we aim to develop scalable solutions that address the evolving needs of utility-scale renewable energy projects and support India’s transition towards a more flexible and reliable power ecosystem.

The plant has been in preparation since July 2026, when Mecpower Solutions signed an MoU with the Government of Gujarat for it at an investment of about INR 160 crore. The company has since shown the Cosmos container that it intends to build there at REI Expo 2026. Sahaj Solar and Solex Energy have also announced BESS plants in Gujarat, of 1.8 GWh at Dakor and of 10 GWh respectively.
