Meine Electric iron-air LDES clears independent testing

A 6-hour charging and 18-hour discharging cycle has been independently validated for Meine Electric’s iron-air battery technology. Customized Energy Solutions tested two electrochemical cells for capacity retention, electrochemical performance and operational stability under the asymmetric daily cycle.

Meine Electric, an India-based battery technology startup, has completed independent validation of its proprietary Fast Charge Long Discharge iron-air battery system. Customized Energy Solutions tested two electrochemical cells through its CES Battery Laboratory, confirming operational stability under a cycle involving 6 hours of charging and 18 hours of discharging.

The structured protocol evaluated electrochemical performance, capacity retention and operational stability. The asymmetric test cycle was designed to assess whether the cells could repeatedly charge during a shorter period and discharge over an extended period within a daily operating schedule.

Meine Electric developed the technology through electrode development processes and a revised system architecture. The company describes the process as reversible rusting chemistry and has designed the system for daily-cycling renewable energy applications. It reported a levelised cost of storage below $0.05/kWh and approximately INR 5/kWh, although the cost figure was presented as a company claim rather than part of the independent laboratory findings.

Iron-air systems cited in the release have previously focused on multi-day storage, with some existing approaches demonstrating durations of up to 100 hours. Meine Electric is instead developing a system intended to capture energy within a 6-to-8-hour charging window and discharge it overnight. The company identified solar-heavy grids in Asia, the Middle East and Africa as potential markets for this daily operating profile.

Priyansh Mohan, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Meine Electric, said the architecture was intended to adapt iron-air chemistry for daily rather than multi-day cycling. Stuti Kakkar, Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer, said the company was developing the chemistry as grid infrastructure for renewable power systems.

Founded in 2023 by Mohan and Kakkar, Meine Electric is working towards larger demonstrations and pilot deployments. The company has stated a long-term goal of generating $1 billion in revenue by 2032 through grid-scale iron-air battery deployments.
