Executive summary

Construction has officially commenced on the 840 MWh Bertikow battery energy storage project in Brandenburg, Germany. Developed through a collaboration between Enlight Renewable Energy and ENERTRAG, the project represents a milestone in Enlight's European storage expansion. A groundbreaking ceremony attended by company representatives and local stakeholders marked the start of construction.

Israel’s renewable energy company Enlight Renewable Energy Ltd, in partnership with ENERTRAG, has officially begun construction of the Bertikow battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Brandenburg, Germany. The project is reported to have a power capacity of 200 MW and an energy storage capacity of 840 MWh. The groundbreaking ceremony marks a milestone in Enlight's expansion across the European energy storage market, supporting the development of large-scale battery infrastructure as renewable energy deployment increases.

The Bertikow facility is associated with the Bertikow substation and ENERTRAG's renewable energy network, which is connected to transmission system operator 50Hertz. The battery storage project is intended to support electricity grid flexibility and reliability by helping manage fluctuations in renewable electricity generation. Its development reflects the increasing importance of energy storage infrastructure in electricity networks incorporating greater shares of wind and solar power.

According to Enlight's August 2026 financial disclosure, the Bertikow project has an estimated investment cost of US$187 million to US$197 million, with Enlight holding a 50% ownership interest. These financial details provide additional context for the scale of the development and Enlight's participation in Germany's energy storage sector. The project also represents continued collaboration between Enlight and ENERTRAG in advancing energy storage infrastructure.

The official groundbreaking ceremony was reported to have taken place on 13 October 2026, bringing together representatives of Enlight, ENERTRAG and local stakeholders. Marko Liposcak, General Manager of Enlight Europe, addressed attendees on behalf of Enlight. The company acknowledged the contributions of ENERTRAG and its Enlight Europe and Project Execution & Asset Management divisions in advancing the project to the construction stage.

External reporting also identifies grid-forming capabilities as part of the project's planned technical scope. Such capabilities are designed to help battery systems support electricity network stability. ENERTRAG has additionally outlined potential local economic benefits, including municipal tax revenues and a community benefit mechanism for households in Uckerfelde. These measures would extend the project's relevance beyond energy storage infrastructure to the surrounding communities.

With construction underway, Bertikow represents another step in Enlight's European battery storage expansion. Project information from ENERTRAG and regional reporting indicates planned commissioning in 2027, while Enlight's August 2026 financial disclosure identifies the first half of 2028. The commissioning schedule therefore remains subject to clarification. The project is intended to strengthen electricity grid flexibility and support renewable energy integration in Germany.
