Larsen & Toubro’s Renewables business has secured a major EPC order to develop three four-hour battery energy storage projects in the Middle East. The projects will provide a combined 6 GWh of storage capacity and include grid interconnections, pooling substations and underground cables.

Indian engineering and construction company Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a major order through its Renewables business to develop three battery energy storage system projects for an undisclosed client in the Middle East. The projects will collectively provide 6 GWh of energy storage capacity.

Each project will use a four-hour BESS configuration designed to store electricity and dispatch it when required. The systems are intended to support grid stability, renewable energy integration and energy shifting by storing surplus electricity during lower-demand periods and supplying it during periods of higher demand.

L&T’s scope extends beyond the battery storage facilities to associated grid infrastructure. The packages include grid interconnections, pooling substations and underground cables, providing the electrical infrastructure required to integrate the storage facilities with the wider power system.

The BESS installations will incorporate liquid cooling technology. According to L&T, the cooling system is intended to support higher power density while improving system safety and operational life. Thermal management is an important part of large-scale battery storage projects because operating temperatures need to be controlled across battery cells and associated equipment.

The three projects represent a significant addition to energy storage deployment in the Middle East as regional power systems increase renewable generation and require additional flexibility. Four-hour battery systems can shift electricity across different periods of the day, allowing stored renewable electricity to be dispatched when grid demand increases.

L&T said projects of this scale involve requirements covering plant performance, workforce mobilisation, safety, quality and project timelines. The company will apply its engineering, procurement and construction capabilities to deliver the storage and grid infrastructure packages.

Under L&T’s internal order classification, a “major” order has a value between INR 5,000 crore (~ $ 524.65 million) and INR 10,000 crore (~ $1.04 Billion). The company did not disclose the specific contract value, client name, individual project capacities, project locations within the Middle East or expected commissioning schedules in the announcement.

The order expands L&T’s involvement in utility-scale energy storage infrastructure and adds a 6 GWh portfolio of four-hour BESS projects to its renewables project pipeline.
