Quinbrook advances 3 GWh Supernode BESS

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Australia’s Supernode BESS campus has completed commercial operations for Stage 2 by Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners, while Stage 3 reached financial close on A$469 million in debt financing. The first three stages will provide 780 MW/3,074 MWh, with CATL supplying energy storage systems and lifecycle services across the development.

Global energy transition investment manager Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners has completed commercial operations for Stage 2 of its Supernode battery storage campus north of Brisbane. Stage 3 has also reached financial close, marking another step in the project’s phased development.

Supernode is located at Brendale, north of Brisbane. The project sits next to the South Pine substation. The site has around 4,000 MW of available connection capacity. The wider development is planned to exceed 3 GWh of storage capacity.

Stage 3 has secured AUD 469 million (~ $336.28 million) in debt financing. This brings total financing across Stages 1, 2 and 3 to around AUD 1.2 billion. Together, the three stages will provide 780 MW/3,074 MWh of battery storage capacity. The capacity is backed by long-term offtake arrangements.

CATL is the main energy storage system supplier for all three stages. Its EnerC Plus systems have been deployed in Stages 1 and 2. Stage 3 will use CATL’s TENER S system. The companies have also worked together to optimise the project design and make better use of the available land.

According to CATL, EnerC Plus allows back-to-back installation. This reduces the required site footprint by around 20% compared with EnerC. Its liquid-cooling system helps control temperatures inside the container. The system is designed for a 20-year operating life.

CATL will also provide long-term support under a service agreement. This includes condition monitoring, performance tracking, fault response and preventive maintenance.

Quinbrook said both Origin-contracted stages were delivered on schedule. With Stage 3 now financed, development of Supernode will move into its next phase.

CATL and Quinbrook are also working on EnerQB, an eight-hour battery storage solution. It is being considered for future stages of the Supernode development.
