Shell Energy Philippines (SEPH), a wholly owned Shell company and power marketing and trading business in the Philippines, has progressed the development of its planned 30 MW/60 MWh Hermosa Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Hermosa, Bataan. The milestone follows the execution of agreements covering the project’s engineering, construction and long-term operations.
Under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract, Power Dimension, Inc. will undertake the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the battery storage facility. The company's scope also covers the associated electrical systems and balance-of-plant infrastructure required for the project.
The facility will be based on Sungrow's PowerTitan 3.0 battery energy storage technology. Shell Energy Philippines has separately entered into a Long-Term Service Agreement (LTSA) and Operations and Maintenance (O&M) agreement with Sungrow Power Technology Solutions Philippines Inc. Under these agreements, Sungrow will provide ongoing technical support, maintenance and operational services for the storage facility.
The Hermosa BESS will have a power capacity of 30 MW and an energy storage capacity of 60 MWh, providing a two-hour storage duration. The system is designed to store electricity when supply is available and discharge it when required. This capability is intended to support grid reliability and provide additional operational flexibility to the Philippines' electricity system.
According to Shell Energy Philippines, execution of the EPC, LTSA and O&M agreements establishes the framework required to move the project into its next development phase. The company said battery storage can contribute to power system flexibility and reliability as the country's electricity system evolves and integrates a broader range of energy sources.
Once operational, the Hermosa facility will be owned and operated by Shell Energy Philippines. The project will form part of the company's growing energy infrastructure portfolio in the country.
The development comes as battery energy storage systems take on a larger role in electricity networks by shifting electricity between periods of availability and demand. For the Hermosa project, the combination of the EPC contract and long-term service and O&M arrangements establishes responsibilities covering construction, commissioning, technical support and ongoing operations.
Shell Energy Philippines expects the project to contribute to a more flexible and resilient electricity system once it enters operation. The company's August 12 announcement did not specify the project's construction start date, commissioning schedule or investment value.
