AMEA Power, a renewable energy developer headquartered in the United Arab Emirates, has announced the successful commissioning of the 600 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and the 500 kV substation at its 1,000 MW Solar PV and 600 MWh Battery Storage Project in Benban, Egypt. The company develops utility-scale clean energy projects across Africa, the Middle East and other emerging markets, with a clean energy pipeline of more than 6 GW across 20 countries and over 2.6 GW of projects in operation or under and near construction.
The commissioning marks an important milestone for the Benban project, with phased power dispatch to the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) grid now underway. According to AMEA Power, the project will strengthen grid reliability, enhance the integration of renewable energy and support Egypt's clean energy ambitions.
The project combines 1,000 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity with a 600 MWh battery energy storage system, making it one of the largest integrated renewable energy developments in the region. The newly commissioned 500 kV substation forms a key part of the project's grid connection infrastructure, enabling electricity generated by the project to be delivered to Egypt's national transmission network through EETC.
AMEA Power stated that the project represents another step in the deployment of large-scale renewable energy infrastructure in Egypt. The company noted that the integration of battery energy storage with utility-scale solar generation is intended to support a more reliable electricity system while advancing the country's clean energy goals.
Upon full commissioning, the Benban development is expected to become the largest solar PV and battery energy storage project of its kind in Africa. AMEA Power said this milestone will further strengthen the role of large-scale renewable energy projects in supporting the continent's energy transition.
To deliver its projects, AMEA Power works in partnership with global supply chain companies, financial institutions and electricity offtakers committed to long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs). Alongside project development, the company also works with local stakeholders to establish programmes that support communities located near its renewable energy projects.
With the battery energy storage system and 500 kV substation now commissioned and phased power dispatch underway, the Benban project has reached another significant stage in its development. The project is expected to play an important role in supporting Egypt's renewable energy expansion while contributing to a more reliable and resilient electricity network as it progresses toward full commissioning.
