A partnership will integrate battery energy storage into BNZ's operational solar portfolio in Italy. The 240 MWh deployment supports the company's expanding European storage pipeline and includes equipment supply, commissioning, energy management integration, and long-term service support.
BNZ, an independent power producer (IPP) focused on developing, constructing and operating renewable energy assets, has signed a strategic agreement with Sungrow for the deployment of 240 MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) across its operational solar projects in Viterbo, Lazio, Italy. The agreement establishes Sungrow as BNZ's preferred battery storage supplier and supports the expansion of hybrid renewable energy projects across Europe.
The project will integrate battery storage into the 45 MW Rinaldone and 53 MW Camposcala solar plants, both of which have been operational since 2025. Together, the facilities provide 98 MW of installed solar capacity and will now be upgraded with energy storage to improve renewable energy utilization, increase operational flexibility and strengthen grid reliability.
The partnership forms part of the wider framework agreement between Sungrow and Nuveen Infrastructure, the owner of BNZ. It supports BNZ's strategy to expand its battery portfolio, which currently includes 530 MW of storage capacity under development within an overall 850 MW European battery pipeline. Across solar, wind and storage technologies, BNZ's renewable development pipeline exceeds 2.7 GW.
Sungrow will provide a complete battery energy storage solution under the contract. The scope includes battery systems, containers, power conversion systems (PCS), medium-voltage systems (MVS), commissioning services, on-site acceptance testing, technical training and integration with a third-party energy management system (EMS).
The agreement also includes a Long-Term Service Agreement (LTSA) covering extended warranties for critical components, preventive maintenance, continuous 24/7 remote monitoring, and guaranteed performance, availability and energy efficiency throughout the operating life of the storage systems.
Battery deployment represents one of BNZ's strategic priorities for increasing renewable energy integration while supporting a more flexible electricity network. The Rinaldone solar plant produces enough renewable electricity to supply around 16,000 households annually while avoiding approximately 23,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. The Camposcala facility generates sufficient clean electricity for roughly 17,000 people, preventing around 18,535 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.
Italy is expected to become one of BNZ's leading battery storage markets. The company plans to deploy close to 1 GWh of energy storage across eight projects located mainly in Lazio, Sicily and Puglia, with the first battery installations scheduled to begin during 2026. The agreement further expands Sungrow's presence in Europe's energy storage market while supporting greater renewable integration and grid flexibility.
