

CPS Energy has launched an RFP to procure up to 500 MW of new battery energy storage capacity in San Antonio, Texas, under its Vision 2027 Generation Plan. The initiative supports rising electricity demand, grid reliability, and the city’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan, with total operational and contracted storage expected to exceed 1 GW.

Texas–based municipally owned public power utility, CPS Energy has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to procure up to 500 MW of additional battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity in San Antonio, Texas. The solicitation is part of CPS Energy’s approved Vision 2027 Generation Plan, outlining planned generation and capacity additions for the San Antonio service area.
The RFP invites third-party submissions for battery energy storage projects designed for integration into CPS Energy’s existing generation portfolio. After the procurement process concludes, the utility has stated that its combined operational and contracted battery storage capacity is expected to exceed 1,000 MW. This total includes commissioned facilities, projects currently under development, and capacity sought through the ongoing solicitation.
CPS Energy has currently deployed 50MW of storage capacity under the Vision 2027 generation plan. In parallel, 470 MW of battery storage capacity remains under development, with commercial operation scheduled for 2026.
The RFP follows the City of San Antonio’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP) framework, which sets long-term carbon neutrality targets while supporting a diversified generation mix.Submissions for CPS Energy’s newly issued RFP are due 30 January, 2026.
