The 300 MW/1,200 MWh Nighthawk Energy Storage Project in Poway has entered commercial operation. Developed, constructed, owned and operated by Arevon, the four-hour lithium iron phosphate battery facility is designed to strengthen grid reliability in the San Diego region and can supply electricity for up to 385,000 homes during peak demand.

Arevon Energy, Inc., a US-based energy developer, owner and operator, has brought its 300 MW/1,200 MWh Nighthawk Energy Storage Project into operation in Poway, California. The standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) is the largest standalone storage project in Arevon's portfolio and is designed to provide four hours of electricity during periods of peak demand.
The Nighthawk facility uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology. The system stores electricity during periods of lower demand and dispatches stored energy when electricity demand increases. According to Arevon, the project can provide enough energy to serve up to 385,000 homes for as long as four hours while supporting grid reliability across the San Diego region.
Arevon developed and constructed the project and will continue to own and operate the facility. Nighthawk operates under a long-term agreement with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E). The project is intended to support California's electricity reliability requirements as energy storage becomes a larger part of the state's power system.
The project also provides local economic contributions in Poway and the surrounding area. Arevon expects Nighthawk to generate more than $30 million in property tax revenue over its operating lifetime. The revenue is expected to contribute to local schools, public safety, infrastructure improvements and other community services. More than 130 workers were employed at the site during peak construction.
Arevon marked completion of the project with an on-site ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by representatives from the company, government agencies, local businesses and community organizations. Participants included representatives from the California Public Utilities Commission, San Diego County, the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Poway Chamber of Commerce.
Beyond project construction, Arevon has supported several organizations in Poway and the wider San Diego community. Its local engagement has covered youth programs, first responders, services for adults with special needs, climate education and nonprofit initiatives. The operational Nighthawk project adds 1,200 MWh of four-hour battery storage capacity to California's electricity system while providing a large-scale resource for managing periods of higher power demand.
