Germany certifies Sungrow PCS for grid-forming operation

Germany’s VDE FNN prototype certification has been issued to Sungrow’s SC210HX series PCS by TÜV Rheinland. Sungrow, a China-based PV inverter and ESS equipment manufacturer, has obtained a VDE FNN Prototype Certificate for its SC210HX series PCS. TÜV Rheinland issued the certificate after testing the equipment against German medium and high-voltage grid connection requirements and grid-forming performance criteria. Sungrow described the product as the first energy storage PCS to complete the full set of these requirements. 

The certification applies to PowerTitan systems equipped with the SC210HX series PCS. Sungrow stated that the certification can shorten grid connection procedures, reduce acceptance-related project risks and support access to European inertia-based storage markets. European investors and lending institutions also use TÜV Rheinland VDE certification when assessing equipment compliance and project financing requirements. 

VDE FNN developed the certification framework for German grid technology and operating standards. Its requirements cover the integration of equipment connected to medium and high-voltage networks, including compliance, equipment performance and grid-support functions. The framework is used by grid operators, project developers and financial institutions when evaluating storage equipment and projects. 

Sungrow’s Stem-Cell Grid-Forming Technology allows equipped systems to absorb or deliver active and reactive power. The source states that the functions include frequency regulation, voltage regulation and backup power support. It also refers to the SC210CX series PCS in its technical explanation, while identifying the SC210HX series as the certified equipment elsewhere in the announcement. 

On weak grids with high renewable energy penetration, the converter is designed to retain voltage-source characteristics and provide dynamic reactive current during short-circuit faults. The system can also establish a grid without external synchronisation, enabling black start and islanded operation. Sungrow said these functions are intended for remote European storage plants and off-grid projects. 

The completed tests covered the equipment hardware, control algorithms and grid-forming performance. Sungrow stated that certification could help developers meet European entry requirements for inertia-based storage and avoid delays during project acceptance. The company also linked the certification to project bankability, financing prospects and asset assessments.
