Huawei Digital Power, a China-based provider of digital power technologies, has outlined a grid-forming strategy for future power systems at The Smarter E 2026 in Munich. Steven Zhou, President of Smart PV & ESS Product Line, said the company is focusing on integrated PV and BESS systems intended to reinforce grid stability as renewable penetration increases. The announcement also included the formal upgrade of Huawei's LUNA energy storage brand to LUTERRA.
The European context formed a central part of the presentation. Wind and solar penetration in Europe is expected to reach 64% by 2030, while the declining share of traditional synchronous generators is creating challenges involving grid resilience, system strength and dispatch complexity. European markets are responding through increased grid investment, wider deployment of grid-forming BESS, new grid codes containing grid-forming requirements and a shift from energy arbitrage toward a broader range of ancillary services.
Huawei identified black start, inertia support and short-circuit current support as core grid-forming functions. The company stated that these functions have been validated across operating conditions and power-system timeframes. Zhou said PV and BESS products would need to evolve into primary power sources as the electricity system changes, while hybrid PV-BESS configurations are being developed as alternatives to conventional thermal generation.
The strategy uses Huawei's integration of Bit, Watt, Heat and Battery technologies, described collectively as 4T. It covers products and configurations for multiple user segments and operating scenarios. For C&I applications, Huawei presented a one-fits-all configuration combining PV, BESS, EV chargers and AI scheduling, while its one-match-all platform is intended to adapt to different BESS business models through hardware and software updates.
The presentation cited operating examples in Europe. Huawei stated that the AHS business park in Germany recorded a 10% revenue increase after two years of operating the integrated system. Zhou also said a Carrefour supermarket in Spain reduced its electricity bill by almost 40%, with a five-year payback period. Huawei referenced further demonstrations in Mongolia and the Philippines alongside the examples in Spain and Germany.
