Executive summary

A 20 MWh standalone BESS portfolio is being advanced in Germany by Jinko ESS, the storage subsidiary of JinkoSolar. It consists of three merchant projects of 5 MWh, 5 MWh and 10 MWh, all of which are built on the Jinko Tera system, and it is designed to take part in the spot and ancillary-services markets of the country.

Jinko ESS, a China-based energy storage company and a subsidiary of JinkoSolar, is advancing a standalone BESS portfolio of 20 MWh in Germany, as it announced on 27 October 2026. The portfolio consists of three merchant projects, two of which have a capacity of 5 MWh each, while the third has a capacity of 10 MWh.

Because the three plants are not tied to a specific generation asset, they can respond rapidly to the requirements of the grid and of the market. As merchant projects, they can also capture several kinds of value, and at the same time they can support the balancing, the flexibility and the resilience that are needed in a power system with a growing share of variable renewable energy. The company has combined the different project sizes with a shared delivery approach, so that the storage capacity can be adapted to different merchant uses and market conditions.

The hardware for these uses is the Jinko Tera liquid-cooled energy storage system, which has a rating of 5.01 MWh. The system has been tuned for merchant trading, in which it captures peak-valley spreads, and the company has reported a tested conversion efficiency of 94.1% as well as low-power standby modes. Its grid-forming capability and its fast response enable it to meet grid-balancing and regulation demands, and it can therefore serve the portfolio in both the spot and the ancillary-services markets.

We are very pleased to build on our collaboration through this three-project portfolio. This portfolio shows how stand-alone BESS can provide targeted flexibility across projects of different sizes. We look forward to supporting their long-term success with reliable technology, operational expertise and close partnership.

The portfolio differs from the two other German undertakings that Jinko ESS has reported this autumn on the same system, since both of those are tied to solar generation. The 220 MWh portfolio pairs BESS with planned PV capacity under a hybrid PPA strategy, and the 135 MWh project is connected with a PV plant and is structured to support a hybrid PPA.

Other German BESS have recently been reported with different commercial and financial arrangements. Under a seven-year tolling agreement, Uniper has secured the right to dispatch a planned 20 MW/42 MWh plant at Roßfeld in return for a fixed remuneration to its owner, and GIGA Storage has closed €260 million of debt financing for the 350 MW/1.4 GWh Albatross plant in Lower Saxony.
