Executive summary

Commercial operation has begun at a 10 MW/40 MWh BESS in Galle, Sri Lanka, which Sungrow commissioned for WKV Hydro Technics on 10 September 2026. The system is built on the PowerTitan 2.0 solution of Sungrow, and it is the largest utility-scale BESS that WKV has in the country. It will provide peak shaving and frequency regulation.

Sungrow, a China-based supplier of PV inverters and energy storage systems, has commissioned a 10 MW/40 MWh BESS in Galle, Sri Lanka, on behalf of WKV Hydro Technics. The system has been in commercial operation since 10 September 2026, and the completion of the work was announced by Sungrow on 10 October. For WKV, it is the largest utility-scale BESS that the group has in Sri Lanka.

The system was deployed by WKV Group, which is a subsidiary of Khen Energy Limited, and it has been built with the PowerTitan 2.0 solution of Sungrow. In this solution, the battery system and the power conversion system (PCS) are combined in a single AC-DC block, and the key components are assembled before they are delivered. Sungrow has said that the installation on site is simplified as a result, and that this has contributed to a 50% reduction in grid-connection time. The equipment has also had to be suited to its location, for the site lies approximately 500 metres from the sea, where the environment is hot, humid and corrosive. The system has accordingly been designed for an operational life of at least 15 years.

The commissioning was completed within a short period. The stages from thermal commissioning to the pre-SAT were finished in one week, and the formal site acceptance test (SAT) and the start of commercial operation followed within five days. This was possible because the technical parameters had been configured beforehand, and because the auxiliary power, the liquid-cooling inspections and the grid-connection planning had been completed ahead of the commissioning.

The importance that WKV attaches to the project was expressed by Sudath Pathmal, the Chief Operating Officer of WKV Group. "The commissioning of this Project is not only a technological milestone but a national achievement. By partnering with Sungrow, we have demonstrated how foresight, innovation, and collaboration can reshape Sri Lanka's energy landscape," he said.

The BESS has been installed to strengthen the peak-shaving and frequency-regulation capabilities of the grid in Sri Lanka, where the demand for electricity typically reaches its daily peak at around 7 p.m. The need for such support grows with the share of variable renewable generation, and the long-term power plan of the country aims at 70% of electricity generation from renewable energy sources by 2030, led by solar and wind. Utility-scale battery storage has therefore been identified in the power-sector planning of Sri Lanka as an important technology for the support of the grid.

Sungrow is a company from China that has its headquarters in Hefei. Its technical and delivery experts supported WKV on site through the SAT and up to the commercial operation date.
