Three BESS projects totalling 3,081 MWh at Khavda, Gujarat, have entered commercial operation for Adani Green Energy, lifting its operational battery storage to 6.63 GWh from 3.55 GWh in June 2026. The company says that it now holds more than half of India's operational BESS capacity of about 12.6 GWh.

Adani Green Energy, an India-based renewable energy company, now has 3,081 MWh more BESS in commercial operation at Khavda in Gujarat. That takes its operating battery storage to 6.63 GWh. In June 2026 the figure was 3.55 GWh. The company says that the Khavda installation is now the world's largest BESS at a single location.
The new capacity is spread across three projects held by stepdown subsidiaries, of 642 MWh, 1,355 MWh and 1,084 MWh. They came online alongside 481.9 MW of renewable plants at Khavda and Mundra, made up of 343.3 MW of solar and 138.6 MW of wind. With these additions, the operational renewable generation capacity of the company stands at 20,762.70 MW.
The pace is what sets the Khavda build apart. Adani Green Energy reached 6.63 GWh within 14 months of starting on-site BESS construction, and the latest addition was commissioned in 10 months from the start of its construction. The storage is integrated with the 30 GW renewable energy plant that the company is developing across 538 square kilometers of barren land at Khavda. Its lithium-ion batteries work with an Energy Management System (EMS) and automated telemetry, which manage charging and discharging and support grid services. By the company's count, it now accounts for more than 50% of India's operational BESS capacity of about 12.6 GWh, based on Central Electricity Authority data as of 31 August 2026 and industry disclosures in September.
Sagar Adani, Executive Director at Adani Green Energy, tied that scale to the needs of the grid. "At this scale, storage can make renewable power firmer, more reliable and dispatchable when the grid needs it," he said. "As India's power demand grows, we will continue to scale energy storage solutions, both, battery and pumped storage to support a more resilient, lower-carbon grid."
In FY 2026-27 the company expects to add over 10 GWh of BESS, and it wants 50 GWh of storage within the next five years. Pumped storage projects sit in the same plan, which aims at renewable power that is firm and dispatchable.
Adani Green Energy is based in Ahmedabad, and 20.76 GW of its solar, wind and hybrid plants are already running in 12 states. By 2030 it wants to get to 50 GW.
