Sungrow, a China-based PV inverter and energy storage provider, has partnered with UNSW Sydney and JT Solar Technology, trading as Aussie Hybrid Solar, on an AI-enabled community energy project at The Gibraltar Bowral in New South Wales’ Southern Highlands. The project combines solar generation, battery storage and intelligent energy management to reduce the hospitality venue’s reliance on grid electricity, improve energy resilience and increase on-site use of renewable power.

Hotels and event venues are demanding energy customers. Consumption swings sharply through the day, costs keep rising, and any investment has to earn its keep. The answer here is software crunching live data - solar availability, site demand, electricity prices, grid requirements, battery health - and deciding, moment to moment, whether energy gets used, stored or discharged.

The hardware is four PK stacks of Sungrow's ST200CF PowerKeeper battery energy storage systems, matched with SH110CX hybrid inverters supplied by Aussie Hybrid Solar. UNSW's AI Energy Management System (AI EMS) sits above the lot and runs the charge-discharge cycle autonomously, chasing higher renewable self-consumption and steadier operation.

The ST200CF's modular DC-coupled architecture lets capacity expand without complex transformer upgrades or drawn-out grid approvals, and because the stacks are plug-and-play, retrofits slot straight into the photovoltaic systems and SH110CX hybrid inverters already on site.

The footprint stays compact, installation bends around tight spaces, and the equipment carries the safety certifications a high-visibility venue expects - all without looking out of place where guests can see it.

Extreme environment testing backs up the promise of stable long-term operation, and full-site backup power keeps the venue running through rough weather or a shaky grid. Operators get real-time battery health tracking, so asset performance stays visible across the whole lifecycle.

Richard Chen, Business Development Manager at Sungrow, said that the value of such systems goes beyond simple payback periods. Technology, he stressed, has to be safe, reliable and intelligent enough to follow changing energy needs - and that takes close work between engineering and commercial teams.

Steve Doyle, co-owner of JT Solar and Voltval, pointed to Sungrow's technical support during project development. Sungrow's team independently verified the calculations used for system sizing, which made the savings case easier to put in front of the client. The collaboration, he said, was fantastic throughout.

Folding PowerKeeper into a virtual power plant model, the project shows advanced storage serving commercial reliability and broader community energy goals in the Southern Highlands at the same time.
