ACCIONA plans battery projects in Cuenca and Palencia

Spain-based renewable energy developer and power producer ACCIONA Energía, will install two BESS projects in Cuenca and Palencia, Spain, with commissioning scheduled for late 2027.

The Cuenca battery with a 20 MW of installed capacity and two hours of storage, is planned to be build near the 50 MW Bolarque PV plant in Villalba del Rey.

Palencia will host the smaller project, a 13 MW storage plant near the 22 MW El Cuadrón wind farm at Hornillos de Cerrato and Torquemada. It will also provide two hours of storage.

ACCIONA Energía said that the BESS can help balance changes in PV and wind output and support grid stability. It also cited improved security of electricity supply as benefits of deploying storage.

Battery storage is not new to the company's Spanish portfolio. In 2017, it commissioned a hybrid battery system at a grid-connected wind farm in Barásoain, Navarre. A system using second-life electric vehicle batteries was added at the Extremadura III photovoltaic complex in Almendralejo, Badajoz, in 2024.

The company's storage portfolio extends beyond Spain. Cunningham in Texas has 190 MW/380 MWh of capacity, while a 200 MW/1 GWh battery is under construction at the Malgarida photovoltaic plant in Chile's Atacama Desert. Another 196 MW/980 MWh project is planned at the El Romero photovoltaic plant, also in Chile, and is expected to enter operation by the end of 2027.
