LION Smart Production GmbH, a subsidiary of LION E-Mobility AG, has delivered and installed the BESS containers for a large-scale storage project in Finsterwalde, Germany, being developed by Renoc GmbH. The company has also started grid connection works as the project moves toward commercial operation.

Finsterwalde is one of the biggest energy storage projects being undertaken by LION Smart as its technology partner. The firm Renoc, which focuses on green energy and grid scale energy storage infrastructures, is undertaking the project in collaboration with the local municipal utility as there is a continued growth of energy storage facilities in Germany to facilitate renewable power integration into the grid.

Under the first phase of construction, the project will deliver 5 MW of installed power and 20 MWh of storage capacity. Commissioning is scheduled for July 2026, subject to approvals from the grid operator and relevant authorities. The installation uses LION Smart’s containerized BESS technology developed for grid-connected applications, with a focus on operational reliability, safety standards and system integration capabilities.

The project has also been designed for future expansion. In the second construction phase, planned for early 2027, the facility’s installed power is expected to increase to 15 MW while total storage capacity will double to 40 MWh. Once completed, the project is expected to become one of the largest battery storage facilities in the Finsterwalde region.

Dr. Joachim Damasky, Managing Director of LION Smart Production, said the project demonstrates the company’s ability to deploy BESS technology efficiently and reliably in large-scale applications together with partners such as Renoc.

With the planned expansion to 15 MW/40 MWh, the Finsterwalde project is expected to contribute to regional grid flexibility and renewable energy balancing requirements. The development forms part of LION Smart’s expanding BESS project pipeline across Germany and Europe, where the company is positioning itself as a supplier of integrated storage systems and a technology partner for utility-scale energy storage applications. The Finsterwalde installation is also expected to serve as a reference project for future commercial deployments and investor engagement.
