PROJECT SNAPSHOT
Company: PowerBank Corporation
Project: BESS SFF 06
Capacity: 4.99 MW
Location: Ontario, Canada
Contract: 22-year IESO agreement
Key Benefit: Grid stability & renewable integration
PowerBank Corporation (NASDAQ: SUUN) has officially launched commercial operations for its 4.99 MW BESS in Cramahe, Ontario. It is well known as the BESS SFF 06 project. The facility is now fully functional and has begun generating revenue, marking a significant milestone in the company's North American energy infrastructure portfolio.
BESS SFF 06 was built on the same site as an existing ground-mount solar project, which has been under an IESO Feed-In Tariff contract since 2015. However, this battery project is a separate entity and secured its own 22-year agreement through the IESO’s E-LT1 RFP in July 2023. The deal is particularly strong, with a fixed capacity payment of $1,221 per MW each business day. It is above the $876 average for other storage projects in that same category. Now that it’s officially up and running. The project provides 4.74 MW of daily capacity for 251 business days a year. It clearly shows PowerBank’s competitive edge in Ontario’s energy market.
The project also gets a nice boost from 2024 Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit. It’s a 30% refundable credit on new tech costs, which really helps the bottom line. For PowerBank, this is exactly how it like to work. The company is using these kinds of government incentives to move faster on green energy without sacrificing its financial goals.
Funding for BESS SFF 06 comes from $28.1 million joint loan that also covers the BESS 903 project. The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) provided the financing. It acts as the lender, administrative and collateral agent and green loan structuring agent. 1000234763 Ontario Inc. (or "ProjectCo") owns the project and is the one officially borrowing the funds. This project is PowerBank’s first big step into the battery storage market. This is an industry that experts at Fortune Business Insights expect to hit over $31 billion by 2029. PowerBank actually picked up its stake in ProjectCo back in July 2024, as part of their $45 million deal to acquire Solar Flow-Through Funds Ltd.
Ownership of ProjectCo is split right down the middle. PowerBank holds an indirect 50% stake. The other 50% belongs to a partnership made up of First Nations communities in Ontario. With over 100 MW of projects already under the company's record and more than 1 GW currently in works, PowerBank has the experience needed to make this project a success. Between their solid track record and a strong network of partners, the company is well-prepared to deliver the kind of reliable, high-impact clean energy solutions the market is looking for.
With the launch of BESS SFF 06, PowerBank has officially entered the battery storage market. It proves they can deliver the critical infrastructure needed for a greener, more reliable grid. By combining deep engineering expertise of the company with strategic First Nations partnerships and a 30% tax credit, the company has created a solid blueprint for future growth. This project isn't just a one-off win. It’s the first step in a massive 1 GW pipeline aimed at transforming North America’s clean energy landscape along with delivering strong financial returns.
