U.S.-based energy storage developer, Plus Power has commissioned the 175 MW / 350 MWh Cross Town utility scale Energy Storage facility in Gorham, Maine. The facility marks the largest battery energy storage system connected to the ISO New England grid.

The Cross Town lithium-ion BESS charges during low demand and discharges at peak load, supporting grid balance, reliability, and ISO New England capacity needs.

The project supports Maine’s target of the deploying of 400 MW of battery energy storage by 2030 and broader goals to reach 90% renewable electricity sales by 2030 and 100 % by 2040. Located on approximately five acres, the Cross Town facility interconnects adjacent to Central Maine Power’s 115 kV Moshers substation, a congested part of transmission grid. Its location enables the battery system to reduce congestion and facilitate the transfer of wind-generated electricity from Northern Maine to load centers in Southern Maine and the Boston area.

Cross Town comprises 156 units of Sungrow’s PowerTitan battery energy storage system. The equipment has been selected to operate under Maine’s variable and cold climate conditions. Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) activities were carried out in collaboration with Maine-based Cianbro Corporation.

This project is Plus Power’s second operational BESS asset in New England after the 150 MW / 300 MWh Cranberry Point Energy Storage project in Carver, Massachusetts, entered service in spring 2025. According to the company, Cranberry Point responded during a June heat-driven scarcity event when demand exceeded forecasts by 200 MW, dispatching energy through ISO New England as prices reached $1,110/MWh. Both Cross Town and Cranberry Point were reported as fully available during Winter Storm Fern, providing capacity during periods of extreme cold.

With Cross Town now online, Plus Power has expanded its footprint in the ISO New England market, adding large-scale battery capacity intended to address peak demand, transmission congestion, and system reliability requirements across the region.

Plus Power develops, owns and operates stand-alone battery storage projects across the United States and has a development portfolio about 11 GW across more than 20 states.  It owns nine operating facilities located in Arizona, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts and Texas that total 1,650 MW / 4,150 MWh.  

Janet Mills, Maine Governor stated that Maine has commissioned the largest energy storage project of its kind in New England, expected to lower electricity costs and improve reliability during periods of grid stress, including extreme cold conditions.

Naveen Abraham, CEO of Plus Power, said that the company has brought another large-scale facility online in New England and will continue working with ISO New England to provide battery energy storage services supporting regional grid reliability.
