Finland-based battery storage specialist, Merus Power has signed an agreement with Neve Oy to build a 30 MW / 80 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland. The companies have also agreed on comprehensive operations and maintenance services for the facility.

The project is designed to operate in reliably extreme Arctic conditions and withstand temperatures as low as -50 °C, heavy snowfall and ice and will be delivered by the end of 2026. The system incorporates grid forming technology that provides grid inertia and enhances electricity grid stability, and resilience of the electricity system.

Merus Power previously delivered grid forming energy storage facilities in the Nordic region, including installations in Valkeakoski and Lappeenranta.

For the Rovaniemi project, Merus Power is responsible for the manufacture, installation, and testing of the battery system. The project is based on technology developed in Finland and integrates the company’s proprietary software platform for monitoring and control within critical electricity infrastructure. Finnish-developed software, quality processes, and cyber security features are configured to maintain system control and operational reliability during extreme weather events and grid disturbances.

Neve Oy is a Lapland-based, multi-sector group owned by the city of Rovaniemi. It operates electricity networks, district heating, water services and fiber networks in Finland. The addition of the 30 MW / 80 MWh BESS is expected to enhance the flexibility of Neve Oy’s energy portfolio and support secure electricity supply under demanding climatic conditions.

Kristian Gullsten, CEO of Neve Oy, said Arctic conditions set strict technical requirements for electrical systems and that Merus Power’s solution supports Neve Oy’s strategy to strengthen energy infrastructure in Lapland.

Kari Tuomala, CEO of Merus Power said the company’s energy storage systems are designed for demanding grid environments where performance, reliability and availability are critical and that the modular architecture allows project-specific configuration to support Neve Oy’s system flexibility and operational reliability.
