RWE approves FID for Pembroke 700 MWh battery storage project

RWE has taken a Final Investment Decision (FID) on 350 MW/700 MWh Pembroke battery storage project in South Wales, UK. The GBP 200 million (USD 264.3 million) Pembroke project represents one of the company’s largest planned storage investments in the UK. The facility incorporates 212 lithium-ion battery containers and can supply two hours of electricity for 300,000 UK homes. The project already holds planning consent and Capacity Market contract. Construction is expected to begin in 2026, with operations planned for 2028.

UK-based electricity generator and power producer, RWE, has taken a Final Investment Decision (FID) on the 350 MW/700 MWh Pembroke battery storage project in South Wales, UK. The GBP 200 million (USD 264.3 million) Pembroke project represents one of RWE’s largest planned storage investments in the UK. 

The project construction was announced by First Minister Eluned Morgan at the Wales Investment Summit. The Pembroke facility will be built on a 5.1-hectare site south of RWE’s Pembroke Power Station. It will comprise 212 lithium-ion battery containers. Once operational, the system will be able to discharge up to 350 MW for two hours, equivalent to 700 MWh. This is sufficient to power nearly 300,000 UK homes for two hours. 

The project obtained a planning consent in January and was successful through the UK’s latest Capacity Market auction. Construction is expected to be scheduled in the first half of 2026, and commissioning and are operations estimated for the second half of 2028. 

RWE is currently involved in over 3 GW of energy across 12 sites in Wales, of which around 1 GW is renewable. The company also reported that its wind farms have provided more than GBP 21 million to neighboring Welsh communities through community benefit funds. Globally, RWE develops, builds and operates battery storage systems in the USA, Europe, and Australia. The company currently manages about 1.2 GW of operational storage capacity and has an additional 2.7 GW under construction. RWE has outlined plans to expand its global battery storage portfolio in the following years. 

Nikolaus Valerius, CEO of RWE Generation SE, said that the growth in renewable generation is creating a higher need for rapid grid support services. He noted that the Pembroke Battery project is designed to store excess electricity and deliver it to the national grid when required. 

Eluned Morgan, First Minister for Wales stated that the investment highlights Wales’ position in the UK energy system and said the Pembroke Battery project is expected to support regional needs and nearby communities. 

Tom Glover, RWE UK Country Chair, said, Wales offers scope for growth across multiple energy technologies and observed that current government actions aim to enable further project development in the region.
