ENGIE has acquired a fully permitted 52 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Pisa province, Tuscany, from ReFeel New Energy. The project has secured a 15-year Capacity Market contract under Italy’s CRM-27 framework, with construction planned for early 2026 and commercial operation targeted for 2027. Once operational, the facility will provide grid balancing and flexibility services, expanding ENGIE’s Italian battery storage portfolio to 300 MW / 1,108 MWh.

France-based global utility group, ENGIE, has acquired a 52 MW Battery Energy Storage System project in Tuscany, central Italy. The Pisa province project was acquired from ReFeel New Energy, a joint venture between ReFeel and SUSI Partners operating in renewable generation and energy storage development across Italy.
The BESS project has already received all required authorizations and has been awarded a 15-year Capacity Market contract under Italy’s CRM-27 framework. Construction is planned to start in the first quarter of 2026, and quarter of 2026 and is expected to enter commercial operation in 2027. Once commissioned, the facility is expected to support the Italian electricity system by providing grid balancing, flexibility and regulation services over a 15-year period.
Following the acquisition, ENGIE’s battery storage portfolio in Italy has reached 300 MW with a total energy capacity of 1,108 MWh. This includes 250 MW / 1,050 MWh under construction, and 50 MW / 58 MWh is currently in operation. The portfolio includes seven BESS projects distributed across multiple regions.
ENGIE’s total installed capacity in Italy exceeds 1 GW across renewable generation and storage assets. This includes 18 photovoltaic plants with a combined capacity of 250 MW, 19 wind farms totaling 474 MW, and an expanded BESS portfolio of 300 MW. The BESS segment is included within ENGIE’s target to reach 1.6 GW of combined renewable generation and storage capacity in Italy by 2030.
