U.S.-based developer and operator of utility-scale battery energy storage systems, GridStor, has announced the execution of a tolling agreement with Fortune 500 company for the construction of the 150 MW/300 MWh Gunnar Reliability Project in Hidalgo County, Texas. The facility represents one of the company’s expanding investments in large-scale storage assets across the central United States. Construction already underway and commercial operations planned for the end of 2026.

The Gunnar Reliability Project is set to operate within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) power market, where electricity demand continues to raise along with industrial expansion and population growth. The system is designed to provide grid-level flexibility during peak periods, supporting peak load management, grid balancing, and short-duration reliability services with two-hour storage duration.

Construction activities at the Hidalgo County site are expected to support more than 100 jobs during development phase, including skilled trades and apprenticeship positions. Once operational, the facility is expected to provide power to approximately 95,000 Texas households during peak demand hours, supporting supply adequacy in the Lower Rio Grande Valley region of ERCOT.

 ERCOT estimates that Texas peak electricity demand could increase by more than 50% by 2030, due to higher power use from large industrial customers. The ERCOT power system currently includes more than 12,000 MW of deployed battery energy capacity, reflecting the growing role of storage in meeting system needs.

Upon completion,the Gunnar Reliability Project will become GridStor’s second operating battery energy storage facility in Texas. The company’s Hidden Lakes Reliability Project, a 220 MW battery facility located in Galveston County, Texas, entered operations earlier this year.

Goldman Sachs Asset Management supports GridStor’s investment activities, with the company managing more than 3 GW of battery storage projects in advanced development or under construction across the western and central United States.

Chris Taylor, CEO of GridStor, said that battery energy storage supports reliable power supply for households and businesses in the Lower Rio Grande Valley during periods of rising electricity demand.
