

FlexGen has commissioned two utility-scale battery energy storage projects for Alliant Energy in Wisconsin and Iowa, totaling 174 MW. The Wood County and Wever BESS facilities integrate with nearby solar assets, support grid reliability and peak demand management, and are operated using FlexGen’s HybridOS™ platform to provide flexible, real-time energy storage services.

U.S.-based Utility-scale BESS provider, FlexGen has placed two utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) projects into operation in Wisconsin and Iowa, U.S. Midwest, totaling 174 MW.
FlexGen designed and constructed the battery systems for Alliant Energy, a U.S.–based electric utility. The systems include the 75 MW Wood County BESS in Saratoga, Wisconsin is on land adjacent to the Alliant Energy’s 150 MW solar field. Alliant Energy says Wood County BESS will bring its planned and operational energy storage in Wisconsin to 275 MW. This facility will be able to power 80,000 homes up to four hours.
Located in Southeast Iowa, the 100 MW Wever BESS is on land next to a separate 150 MW solar plant. The storage system will be able to power 100,000 homes for up to four hours. Upon completion of three other projects, Alliant Energy says Iowa’s planned battery storage capacity will reach around 400 MW.
The Wood County and Wever projects operate using FlexGen’s HybridOS™ energy management platform. The software enables real-time monitoring, system optimization and dispatch control capabilities. Automated controls allow the batteries to charge or discharge in response to grid conditions, operational signals and load requirements. These functions support multiple grid services, including energy shifting, peak management and operational flexibility.
The BESS facilities are designed to charge using electricity from nearby solar generation, wind resources or other available supply sources. Stored electricity can be released to the grid when demand increases, including during hot summer days and cold winter nights. This operating model supports load balancing and grid operations by shifting energy availability across different demand periods.
Under its contract with Alliant Energy, FlexGen provided system design, battery components, and elements of the overall system architecture at both sites, along with software and control solutions for monitoring and operational management. Alliant Energy has stated that both battery systems are continuously monitored to allow operators to respond to performance changes in real time. The utility also collaborated with local fire departments near both project locations to prepare for emergencies at either site.
Jason Rislov, Senior Vice President of Operations at FlexGen, said the company provides energy storage and grid operation systems that support utility reliability, renewable integration, and long-term load growth management.
