In a move to expand non-lithium energy storage in heavy industry, US-based sodium-ion battery developer Alsym Energy and Australian integrated services provider ERITY have signed a 9 GWh Strategic Relationship Agreement. The agreement creates a framework to jointly develop and deliver battery energy storage systems for mining and industrial applications.
The partnership combines Alsym Energy's non-flammable sodium-ion battery technology with ERITY's operational expertise in the mining, resources and energy sectors. The companies also aim to provide reliable, lower-cost and safer energy storage solutions for mining operations that often rely on diesel-powered generation because of their remote locations and limited access to electricity grids.
According to the companies, the mining industry consumes approximately 125 billion liters of diesel annually. Diesel accounts for around 30% to 50% of operating costs at many mining sites while contributing up to 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Through combining battery storage of energy with renewable energy and other sources of power, the firms hope to increase energy reliability and decrease diesel use in their mining activities.
This agreement is mainly focused on mining applications through high-reliability microgrids capable of operating around the clock. Additional use cases include power systems for mineral extraction and processing facilities, AI-enabled mobile data centers used for geological analysis, electrified mining and hauling equipment, and mobile battery energy storage systems that can be relocated across mining sites as operational requirements change.
Alsym Energy said its Na-Series sodium-ion batteries are designed to provide high-power charging and discharging performance while remaining non-flammable. The batteries can also be transported and stored at zero state of charge, making them suitable for mobile energy storage applications where operational flexibility is required.
Initial deployment opportunities include projects associated with Volt Resources Limited and Resource Minerals International Limited in Tanzania, Saudi Arabia, Finland and the United States. The agreement also allows both companies to pursue additional projects with other mining operators across ERITY's global operating regions, including Australia, Africa and the Middle East.
Beyond mining, the companies identified future opportunities for collaboration in electric vehicle charging infrastructure, commercial and industrial energy storage systems and utility-scale battery projects. The partnership also provides a long-term framework for expanding sodium-ion battery deployment across multiple sectors requiring safe and reliable energy storage technologies.
