

Qair secured Rs 7 billion ($150 million) financing for the Stor'Sun hybrid solar and battery storage project in Mauritius. The project combines 60 MWp solar capacity with 256 MWh battery storage. Once operational, it is expected to supply about 8% of national electricity demand and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels within the island grid.

France-based independent renewable energy company, Qair Energy has completed financing for its StorSun hybrid solar and battery energy storage project in Mauritius. The investment totals Rs 7 billion (about $150 million). Financing was arranged with SBM Bank for StorSun I, II and IV and with MCB for StorSun III. The financing represents one of the largest energy investments in the Indian Ocean region in recent years.
The project integrates 60 MWc of solar with a 256 MWh battery storage to address grid stability, energy affordability and carbon reduction. Once operational, it is expected to supply 8% of Mauritius’ national electricity demand.
Financing was structured through separate project phases backed by domestic banks, demonstrating participation of local financial institutions in large-scale hybrid infrastructure. SBM Bank and MCB provided funding through a multi-tranche approach aligned with the phased development of the project.
StorSun forms part of Qair’s broader international portfolio. The company reports more than 1.7 GW of renewable capacity in operation or construction and a development pipeline of 35 GW across 20 countries in Europe, Latin America and Africa. In Mauritius, the hybrid solar plus BESS structure provides a replicable model for island power systems integrating higher shares of renewable generation while maintaining grid reliability.
Abdoulaye Touré, CFO of Qair Africa, said that the StorSun project reflects Qair’s experience in delivering bankable renewable energy projects in complex operating environments. He also acknowledged the role of SBM Bank and MCB in supporting the financing structure for the hybrid solar and battery energy storage project in Mauritius.
