A 25 MW / 125 MWh lithium iron phosphate battery has been energised at OCP Green Energy's Benguerir mining site, the first large-scale BESS in Morocco. Envision Energy supplied and commissioned it under a contract signed in late 2025, and the five-hour system is expected to cut the site's peak-hour bill by about 25%.

Envision Energy, a China-based green technology company, stands behind Morocco's first large-scale lithium iron phosphate BESS, now energised at OCP Green Energy's Benguerir mining site. Under a contract signed in late 2025 it supplied the 25 MW / 125 MWh system and led the commissioning, and testing runs before commercial operation.
Envision provided the full storage system and led the commissioning work. That work tied the BESS into the site's solar generation, its grid conditions and the load profile of an industrial plant that runs around the clock. Surplus solar generated in the middle of the day is held and released into peak consumption hours, which the company says trims the site's peak-hour electricity bill by roughly 25%.
Five hours of storage puts the installation closer to an industrial energy management tool than to a short-duration grid asset. Behind it sits $20 million from the Clean Technology Fund, managed through the African Development Bank Group, and a design life of 25 years on daily charge and discharge cycles. For OCP, the company says, the value is in lower peak-hour costs across those 25 years rather than in the battery capacity itself.
John Lee, general manager of Envision Energy for the Middle East and Africa, said the energisation shows how integrated renewable and storage systems perform in industrial applications. Omar Kadir, chief executive of OCP Green Energy, said in the group's own release that storage is the natural extension of its energy strategy, reconciling variable renewable output with the continuous needs of its industrial platforms, and that the technology opens the way for renewable energy to sit more comfortably in the national power system.
Morocco wants renewable sources to hold 52% of installed electricity capacity by 2030, and Envision presents Benguerir as a benchmark for industrial decarbonisation across Africa.
