Tata Power, an India-based integrated electricity company, is planning an INR 300 crore investment in Mumbai’s BESS infrastructure. The rollout will provide 100 MW/200 MWh of storage capacity across generation facilities, grid applications, and consumer endpoints.
The planned systems are intended to enhance grid reliability, improve demand-side flexibility and optimise power procurement costs. Nilesh Kane, Chief - Transmission and Mumbai Distribution at Tata Power, said the deployment would also support a more resilient power network.
The programme is being developed as electricity requirements increase across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Tata Power identified data centres requiring high-reliability extra-high-voltage connections, the expanding Metro rail network and urban redevelopment projects as three principal demand drivers. The redevelopment activity includes additional high-rise residential construction.
Alongside the BESS rollout, Tata Power plans to expand its urban electricity infrastructure over the next five years. The company intends to increase its distribution substations from 37 to 50 and its consumer substations from 1,227 to 1,507. Its high-tension cable network is planned to grow from 3,040 circuit km to 3,590 circuit km, while the low-tension network is expected to increase from 2,872 circuit km to 3,472 circuit km.
The utility is also considering vertical substations, high-rise consumer substations, underground submersible substations and tower-mounted substations for land-constrained locations. Its Mumbai distribution network currently serves more than 8 lakh consumers through 5,911 km of infrastructure and is expected to exceed 9 lakh consumers in the coming years.
Tata Power expects the peak load on its Mumbai network to reach 2,000 MW. Mumbai's overall electricity demand is projected to reach 6,500 MW by 2031.
