Coulomb Solutions Inc. (CSI), a provider of commercial electrification and mobile energy storage solutions, announced that TÜV Rheinland has certified its 2.3 MWh Mobile BESS base model eBESS2.3-1.0-01 as compliant with applicable UL 9540:2023 requirements. The certification followed a field evaluation, inspection, testing and applicable technical assessment of the system.
UL 9540:2023 addresses system-level safety for energy storage systems and equipment. The evaluation considers the batteries, power conversion equipment, controls, enclosures, protection systems and other critical components as an integrated system. According to CSI, the assessment also covers applicable component-level requirements, electrical and mechanical protection, controls and communications, and environmental and enclosure safety. It includes pack, cell and unit fire testing under the UL 9540A procedure.
CSI’s Mobile BESS combines approximately 2.3 MWh of energy storage with an integrated 1 MW power conversion system providing 480VAC power. It is intended for locations where additional electrical capacity is required but permanent grid infrastructure is unavailable, delayed or uneconomical.
Potential applications include commercial fleet and heavy-duty EV charging, data centers and high-load facilities, construction and remote work sites, utility and grid-support services, peak shaving, demand-charge management and temporary power for entertainment or sporting events.
Unlike stationary BESS installations, CSI said its system is engineered for frequent transportation and deployment. It incorporates commercial vehicle-grade LFP battery technology, integrated thermal management and a rugged system architecture.
CSI has also announced an optional bidirectional Megawatt Charging System configuration for its next-generation eBESS2.3-1.0-02 Mobile BESS. The configuration is designed to provide up to one megawatt of high-power charging to compatible commercial electric vehicles and equipment. CSI said this configuration will also undergo the full suite of UL testing.
The certification supports CSI’s commercialization and deployment of mobile energy storage for applications requiring temporary or rapidly deployable electrical capacity.
