Argentina has awarded 700.5 MW of battery energy storage capacity under its Alma SADI Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) tender, marking one of the country's largest grid-scale storage procurements. The projects were formally awarded through Resolution No. 155/2026 issued by the Secretariat of Energy under the Ministry of Economy. The tender allocates 20 battery storage projects to five companies across seven strategic regions, representing an estimated investment of approximately $700 million.
The Alma SADI program is the first nationwide phase of deploying battery energy storage systems at critical nodes of the Argentine Interconnection System (SADI). The procurement is intended to improve electricity network reliability by providing fast-response storage capacity that supports grid balancing, reserve services and operational flexibility during periods of fluctuating electricity demand.
The competitive tender attracted considerably more market interest than anticipated. Argentina received 235 technical proposals from 37 domestic and international companies, representing a combined 8,338 MW of proposed battery storage capacity—more than eleven times the government's 700 MW procurement target. Following technical evaluations and the opening of financial proposals, the Wholesale Electricity Market Administrator (CAMMESA) prepared the final pre-award recommendations that supported the government's decision.
GENNEIA secured the largest share of the awarded portfolio with seven projects, while DQD Energy received eight projects. 360 Energy Solar was awarded three projects, and ALUAR and INTERMEPRO each secured one project. The awards reflect participation from both established Argentine energy developers and international market participants.
Projects will be developed across seven regions with allocations based on grid reinforcement requirements. Buenos Aires received the largest allocation with 185 MW, followed by NEA Chaco-Formosa with 161.5 MW and the NOA region with 150 MW. Additional projects were awarded in NEA Misiones-Corrientes, Litoral Entre Ríos, Litoral Santa Fe and the Pampa region.
The government stated that battery storage systems will enhance grid stability by rapidly responding to demand fluctuations, increasing dispatch flexibility and providing reserve capacity to reduce the likelihood of electricity outages. The initiative forms part of Argentina's broader electricity modernization introduced in 2024.
The Alma SADI awards build on the earlier Alma-GBA battery storage program, which allocated 713 MW around Greater Buenos Aires with investments exceeding $540 million. Together, the two procurement rounds represent more than 1,400 MW of awarded battery storage capacity and total planned investments approaching $1.24 billion, establishing battery storage as a central component of Argentina's evolving electricity infrastructure.
