Belgium-based renewables developer, Aukera Energy, has secured a €60m debt facility from Kommunalkredit Austria AG to construct its 250MW/500MWh stand-alone battery storage project in Gura Ialomitei in Romania.
According to the company, Gura Ialomitei project will be one of the largest storage projects in Central and Eastern Europe. The project will be delivered in two phases, with first-phase construction already underway and the full project expected to be commissioned by mid-2026. Kommunalkredit acted as Sole Mandated Lead Arranger, while Akereos Capital served as financial advisor, with Clifford Chance Badea as borrower counsel, Dentons as lender counsel, and Rina Consulting providing technical support for the transaction.
Aiden Yates, Managing Director for Project Finance, Aukera, said the Kommunalkredit partnership supported Aukera’s first Romanian storage financing and helped advance the 250 MW project. He noted that battery systems improve flexibility, frequency stability, and power delivery as Romania’s generation mix evolves. He added that the project initiated Aukera’s 2 GW Romanian BESS pipeline and demonstrated its ability to manage large multi-market developments.
Aukera is advancing a pipeline of more than 16 GW across the UK, Germany, Belgium, Italy, and Romania, including 677 MW of onshore wind, 8,145 MW of solar, and 7,237 MW of battery storage under development.
