EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Switzerland-based energy producer and trader Alpiq has acquired the 100 MW / 200 MWh Cheviré battery energy storage system in western France from Harmony Energy. Operational since December 2025, the facility is currently France’s largest active BESS, strengthening Alpiq’s flexible asset portfolio and supporting grid stability through fast-response balancing services.

Switzerland-based Energy producer and trader, Alpiq has acquired the 100 MW / 200 MWh Cheviré battery storage facility in the port of Nantes Saint-Nazaire from Harmony Energy, European energy storage developer. The transaction was completed on 21 January 2026 and adds the largest battery storage facility currently in operation in France to Alpiq’s portfolio of flexible assets.
According to the company, the facility entered operation in December 2025, is currently the largest operational BESS in France and its second physical asset in the country, can meet the electricity needs of 170,000 households for 2 hours.
The facility is located on the former Cheviré fossil-fuel power plant site, which operated on coal, gas, and oil from 1954 to 1986. The site has been repurposed for grid-scale battery storage, enabling fast-response frequency regulation and short-term balancing services for France’s national electricity grid.
The company said, the acquisition marks Alpiq’s second battery storage asset in France along with the 100 MW BESS under construction in La Corne-en-Vexin and scheduled to become operational in 2027. Alpiq has secured more than 750 MW of battery storage capacity, with close to half of the portfolio either operational or under construction in France, Germany, and the Nordic region.
According to Alpiq, it has operated in France since 2002. The company reported supplying more than 25 TWh of energy to French customers in 2025, purchasing around 5 TWh of electricity, and aggregating approximately 2,000 MW of decentralised generation, while expanding its flexibility portfolio through the Cheviré BESS acquisition and the Lac Blanc / Lac Noir hydropower partnership.
Amédée Murisier, Head of Business Division Assets and Executive Board member at Alpiq, said that the Cheviré acquisition aligned with the company’s growth strategy in flexible assets, supporting grid stability and positioning France as a key market for expanding flexibility solutions in Europe.
