Jupiter Wagons Limited is expanding its energy storage business with two major standalone BESS developments in Uttarakhand and West Bengal. Through JEM Energy, the company has emerged as the L1 bidder for a 41 MW/102.5 MWh project from Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited in partnership with Madhav Infra Projects. JWL has also received the formal Letter of Award for a 50 MW/200 MWh BESS project at the Jeerat 132 kV substation in West Bengal. These wins strengthen the company’s utility-scale energy storage portfolio and support its strategy of entering high-growth businesses beyond railways and mobility. JWL has reiterated its target of building a BESS order book of around INR 1,000 crore by FY27.

Jupiter Wagons Limited (JWL) is an Indian private manufacturer of railway freight wagons headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal. Its energy business, Jupiter Electric Mobility (JEM), is also expanding into electric mobility and battery energy storage.
Jupiter Wagons has secured a 41 MW/102.5 MWh standalone BESS project in Uttarakhand and strengthened its battery energy storage system (BESS) portfolio after winning the project in partnership with Madhav Infra Projects Limited when their consortium emerged as the L1 bidder for Cluster C of a tender floated by Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) under the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding mechanism. The project involves the supply and commissioning of a BESS system valued at around INR 100 crore.
In another development, JWL received the formal Letter of Award from West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) for a 50 MW/200 MWh standalone BESS project at the Jeerat 132 kV substation in North 24 Parganas. The project was originally secured in August 2026.
The two developments expand JEM Energy's utility-scale storage footprint and take its presence into Uttarakhand.
Vivek Lohia, Managing Director, JWL, has said that the Uttarakhand and Jeerat BESS projects strengthen JEM Energy’s growth as a scalable energy storage business. He reaffirmed the ₹1,000 crore BESS order-book target by FY27, with EBITDA positivity expected in Q3 FY27 and profitability by FY28.
The Uttarakhand win also supports JWL's broader strategy of entering high-growth energy businesses beyond its traditional railway and mobility operations.
JWL has reiterated its target of building a BESS order book of approximately INR 1,000 crore by FY27, while focusing on utility-scale and commercial and industrial storage opportunities across India.
