By signing an investment agreement, CBAK Energy has planned a 12 GWh battery project in Nanjing, China, focused on large cylindrical sodium-ion cells and integrated battery systems. The company also plans to add 6 GWh of annual capacity at its existing Nanjing facility by the end of 2026.

CBAK Energy Technology Limited, a China-based lithium-ion battery manufacturer and energy solutions provider, is expanding its battery manufacturing plans in Nanjing, China, with a new investment agreement covering a proposed 12 GWh annual production project.
The company signed the agreement in September 2026 with the Nanjing Gaochun Economic Development Zone to develop facilities for the research, development, and manufacturing of large cylindrical sodium-ion battery cells and integrated battery systems.
The planned project is part of CBAK Energy’s broader sodium-ion battery expansion strategy. The production lines will be designed with flexibility to manufacture either sodium-ion or lithium-ion cells, allowing the company to adjust production according to market conditions and customer requirements, including module and battery pack integration.
CBAK plans to advance its 12 GWh project during the second half of 2027, subject to financing. Development will take place in phases, with the timing and scale of investment linked to funding availability, customer demand, and project readiness.
Alongside the new project, CBAK Energy is planning a major expansion at its existing Nanjing facility. The company currently has an annual production capacity of 4.5 GWh for Model 32140 cells. It plans to add another 6 GWh of capacity during the second half of 2026, taking the facility’s total annual cell capacity to 10.5 GWh.
The expansion is intended to address demand for the company’s large cylindrical Model 60150 cells. CBAK Energy is considering two Model 60150 production lines, but could instead install one Model 32140 line and one Model 60150 line, depending on customer demand and market conditions.
At full capacity and assuming all output is sold, the additional 6 GWh capacity could generate an estimated CNY 2.4 billion to CNY 2.7 billion in annual revenue. The proposed 12 GWh project could potentially add another CNY 4.8 billion to CNY 5.0 billion in annual revenue at current lithium-ion cell market prices.
Meanwhile, CBAK Energy is testing its sodium-ion battery cells with customers across residential and portable energy storage, electric mobility, specialty vehicles, start-stop systems, and backup power applications, which further help in future production decisions as the sodium-ion battery business develops.
CBAK Energy is positioning its Nanjing operations to serve growing demand across battery storage and electric mobility applications, keeping both lithium-ion and sodium-ion technologies included in its expansion plans.
