AM Batteries, headquartered in Massachusetts, revolutionizes battery manufacturing with its dry battery-electrode technology and has announced itself as a core subrecipient to receive $50 million awarded by the Manufacturing Deployment Office of the US DOE.
The traditional lithium-ion battery manufacturing depends upon the wet-slurry casting method which drew a major impact on capital and operational expenditure. AM Batteries leads the industry with its patented dry electrode manufacturing technology.
AM Batteries is associated with Coreshell Technologies, which develops high-performance batteries and aims to build out approximately 2 GWh of electrode manufacturing capacity and 1.5 GWh of cell assembly capacity in the United States. The initiative has established a domestic battery supply chain while creating 100+ domestic jobs across production, technical, and administrative roles.
The dry-coating process for cathode manufacturing by AM Batteries eliminates energy-intensive solvent-based wet coating and toxic solvent-recovery infrastructure. The ultimate goal of the initiative is to build high-performance, lower-cost cells for domestic electric vehicle and defense applications. Combining AM Batteries' dry powder-to-electrode technology with advanced material integration will reduce capital costs by up to 40% and reduce operational costs by over 50%.
According to Hieu Duong, CTO of AM Batteries, the U.S. cannot rely on existing conventional technologies for domestic battery-electrode manufacturing. It is essential to reform the fundamental advantages in manufacturing and materials.
The project aims to produce a 100% domestically made high-performance battery cell that is cost-competitive with mass-market cells from Asia. Joining hands with Coreshell Technologies’ MGS Anode process, AM Batteries builds a globally competitive battery industry in the West with lower cost and improved performance.
