Mr. Sagar Adani, Executive Director of Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), stated that rapid electrification is vital to ensure energy security and promote economic growth. The comments were made by Mr. Adani during the first Adani Green Energy Dialogue which took place in London.
The Adani Green Energy Dialogue took place at the Science Museum in London during London Climate Action Week. AGEL organized the event in partnership with the Energy Transitions Commission.
Mr. Adani said countries are facing the combined challenges of energy security, affordability and sustainability. He said that renewable energy would assume a greater role with storage systems such as BESS and pumped storage projects.
AGEL has set a 50 GW renewable energy capacity target for 2030. The company is also developing the 30 GW Khavda renewable energy project in Gujarat. AGEL currently has an operating renewable portfolio of over 19.4 GW across 12 Indian states.
The discussion also covered rising electricity demand from cooling, artificial intelligence, data centres, digital infrastructure and manufacturing. Participants said stable policy, investment and stronger transmission networks will be needed to support wider use of renewable energy.
Lord Turner, Co-chair, ETC said zero-emission economies require broad electrification and decarbonised power generation. He said electrification is already economic in road transport, building heating and low-temperature industrial heat, while technology progress is creating more options for heavy industry heat demand.
As reported by Nigel Topping, Co-founder of Ambition Loop, and Chair of the UK Climate Change Committee, investments in clean power generation continue to be made. Nevertheless, more benefits will come from making those industries that rely on fossil fuels, such as transport and heating, electric. He also noted that falling technology costs and flexible grids are important for supporting investment.
According to Adani Group, the company is going to make an investment of over $100 billion for energy transition and infrastructure. Renewable energy, energy storage, energy transmission, green hydrogen, digital infrastructure and ecosystems are some of the examples of these sectors.
The event concluded with a visit to the Energy Revolution: The Adani Green Energy Gallery at the Science Museum, London. Supported by AGEL, the gallery opened in March 2024 and has received more than one million visitors.
Earlier in the week, Gautam Adani said at the Adani Group AGM that the group plans to expand across several energy areas. The areas include renewable energy, green hydrogen, energy storage, transmission, digital infrastructure and nuclear energy. He also said the group plans to develop up to 10 GW of nuclear power capacity.
