Vopak invests €230M in Dutch Battery Storage platform

Vopak has moved deeper into battery energy storage with the completion of its acquisition of a majority stake in Green Energy Storage (GES). The Rotterdam-headquartered independent tank storage company now holds a 79% controlling stake in GES and has taken a Final Investment Decision (FID) for a 200 MW/800 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Oosterhout, the Netherlands. The combined investment in the acquisition and the project totals approximately €230 million, following the agreement in principle announced in May 2026. 

The transaction expands Vopak’s presence in energy transition infrastructure while adding an established battery storage development platform to its portfolio. Along with the majority acquisition, Vopak has agreed terms to acquire the remaining 21% stake in GES within two years after the transaction closes. As of 1 July 2026, GES has been fully consolidated into Vopak’s financial accounts. 

The Oosterhout BESS will have a power capacity of 200 MW and energy storage capacity of 800 MWh offering four hours of electricity discharge. It is part of the high-voltage electricity grid of the Netherlands and will help ensure balanced electricity production and consumption by increasing grid flexibility and reducing grid congestion due to increased production of renewables. Once operational, it will become one of the biggest battery energy storage projects being developed in the Netherlands. 

Construction is scheduled to begin shortly following the investment decision, with commercial operations expected to commence during the first half of 2028. Greenchoice has signed an eight-year tolling agreement covering 50% of the project’s capacity, becoming the offtaker for half of the battery system. 

Maarten Smeets, Executive Vice President Global Business Development at Vopak, said the completion of the acquisition and the investment decision move the Oosterhout project from intention to delivery. He added that Vopak and the GES team are working to build a battery storage platform in the Netherlands while supporting a reliable and sustainable energy system. 

Guus Bengsch, CEO of GES, said the milestone reflects years of work by the GES team in developing a battery storage platform. He said Vopak’s involvement will help realize the 200 MW/800 MWh project and accelerate the development of the remaining pipeline. 

Erik van Engelen, CEO of Greenchoice, said the battery storage is becoming an essential part of the future energy system. He also said that the project will support flexibility in the Dutch electricity system and help to reduce grid congestion. 

Through GES, Vopak gains access to an existing battery storage project pipeline and asset management platform. The investment forms part of Vopak’s broader strategy to develop infrastructure supporting the energy transition while maintaining a mix of contracted revenues and market-based opportunities.
