PPC Group and METLEN Energy & Metals have formed a 50-50 joint venture to develop battery energy storage projects totaling up to 1,500 MW / 3,000 MWh across Romania, Bulgaria and Italy. The portfolio will deploy 2-hour liquid-cooled LFP battery systems to support renewable integration, enhance grid stability and optimize electricity output from nearby solar and wind generation assets.
PROJECT SNAPSHOT
Greece-based integrated energy company, Public Power Corporation (PPC) Group and METLEN Energy and Metals, Greece-based industrial and energy Company have entered into a joint venture to develop battery energy storage system (BESS) projects with a total capacity of up to 1,500 MW / 3,000 MWh across Romania, Bulgaria and Italy.
The companies will hold a 50% stake in the joint venture to develop, construct and operate utility-scale storage assets in European electricity markets.
The collaboration combines the project development, construction and energy management experience of both companies. PPC Group maintains operations in all 3 target markets. Its existing presence enables faster permitting, development timelines and integration with regional electricity markets. Metlen contributes its long-standing expertise in the delivery and operation of energy and industrial infrastructure, with an established track record in large-scale development across Europe.
The battery systems are positioned to operate along with adjacent PV and wind assets to store excess generation and release it during periods of low renewable output. The facilities are also planned to contribute to grid stability by providing services that support frequency management and system reliability.
The partnership contributes to PPC Group’s target for expanding energy storage capacity within the next 3-years. Projects across multiple countries align with the company’s renewable generation and storage strategy, while nearby storage sites support dispatch and reduce curtailment.
The joint venture forms part of METLEN’s medium-term strategy to expand its presence in the European energy storage sector. Battery storage is a core area within the company’s energy and infrastructure portfolio. The partnership supports expansion of BESS projects in markets with increasing renewable capacity and flexibility needs.
The JV is expected to begin progressing individual country-level project portfolios in stages, with initial deployments planned near existing or upcoming renewable energy sites.
Konstantinos Mavros, Deputy CEO Renewables at PPC Group said that the agreement expands the company’s presence in Southeast Europe while supporting electricity system stability through energy storage projects linked to renewable generation.
Nikos Papapetrou, Chief Executive Director for Renewables, Storage & Energy Transition Platform at METLEN said the collaboration with PPC Group aligns with METLEN’s strategy to expand energy storage projects in Europe and combine both companies’ expertise in developing and operating energy infrastructure.
