France-based energy storage provider, NHOA Energy has commenced the construction of the Broni battery energy storage system, a 10 MW / 51 MWh project located in Broni, Pavia, Italy. The project is being executed for Neoen, France-based independent renewable energy producer. Civil works at the site are currently underway and progressing according to schedule, with commissioning activities planned to begin in late spring 2026.
The Broni battery is designed to provide flexibility services to the Italian electricity system. With discharge duration of approximately 5-hours, the 51 MWh system is expected to support grid stability, frequency regulation and capacity adequacy as renewable energy penetration increases across Italy. The project represents Neoen’s first battery storage asset in the Italian market and forms part of its broader strategy to expand battery storage capacity in key geographies.
The installation is being developed in alignment with Italy’s evolving power market framework, including mechanisms such as the Capacity Market and upcoming storage-focused schemes such as MACSE. By integrating utility-scale battery storage into the network, the project contributes to system balancing requirements and enhances the management of variable generation from wind and solar assets.
For NHOA Energy, the Broni battery adds to its track record of delivering grid-scale energy storage systems in Italy. The company has established industrial operations and technical expertise in the country, supporting the engineering, procurement and construction (IPC) of battery energy storage projects tailored to national grid specifications. The Broni project reflects a continuation of these activities, moving from detailed engineering to on-site execution within defined timelines.
The collaboration between NHOA Energy and Neoen builds on previous projects delivered internationally. In 2025, the two companies completed the 238 MW / 477 MWh Blyth Battery in South Australia, one of the largest energy storage systems in the region. The Broni battery extends this partnership into the Italian market, reinforcing a project pipeline focused on utility-scale storage applications.
Once operational, the 10 MW / 51 MWh system in Broni is expected to play a role in maintaining network reliability and supporting the integration of additional renewable capacity. The project timeline indicates commissioning in late spring 2026, after which the asset will enter commercial operation under Italy’s market structure for flexibility and capacity services.
