Zenobē has commenced commercial operations at its 300 MW/600 MWh Kilmarnock South battery energy storage system in Scotland, delivered in less than two years from financial close. The subsidy-free project forms part of a £1 billion Scottish investment program and increases Zenobē’s operational UK capacity to 731 MW, supporting renewable integration, reducing wind curtailment and enhancing national energy security.

UK-based battery storage developer, Zenobē has begun the commercial operations at its 300 MW/600 MWh Kilmarnock South battery energy storage system (BESS) in Scotland. The project reached go-live status in less than two years following financial close and the start of construction in January 2024.
Located in Kilmarnock South, the 2-hour duration system forms part of Zenobē’s £1 billion investment program across Scotland, equivalent to approximately $1.27 billion. The company reports that 1.3 GW of battery storage capacity is now operational or under construction in the country. With the addition of Kilmarnock South, Zenobē’s total operational capacity in the UK has increased to 731 MW.
The project was delivered in collaboration with multiple supply chain partners. Wärtsilä Energy Storage supplied its Quantum energy storage system technology for the site. Omexom oversaw the balance of plant works, including grid connection infrastructure and associated electrical systems. EDF Wholesale Market Services has been appointed as the route-to-market provider, managing market participation and revenue optimization strategies. Kraken’s platform is supporting EDF’s trading operations by managing the control and dispatch of stored energy.
James Basden, Founder Director of Zenobē, said that Kilmarnock South represents a subsidy-free battery project in Scotland and is designed to reduce energy costs and support UK energy security by storing excess wind generation. He added that the project reflects collaboration between Zenobē and its supply partners, with a focus on lowering consumer electricity costs through expanded battery deployment across the UK.
