Project overview

GEN-I, headquartered in Ljubljana, entered a five-year partnership agreement with SUNOTEC, an integrated solar and energy storage solutions provider, to manage two battery energy storage systems in Bulgaria. The agreement includes a 150 MW / 379 MWh facility and a 50 MW / 126 MWh facility, both developed under SUNOTEC’s investment plan and scheduled to be operational by March 2026.

Operational responsibilities

GEN-I is designated as the exclusive optimizer and trading partner for both systems, managing charging and discharging schedules and their participation intraday, day-ahead and ancillary service markets. Its role includes real-time dispatching and revenue management supported by continuous algorithmic control. The partnership operates under a long-term revenue-sharing structure between SUNOTEC as the asset owner and GEN-I as the optimization partner to meet market and regulatory requirements.

The collaboration links SUNOTEC’s engineering and construction capabilities with GEN-I’s experience in energy trading and flexibility services. It establishes a coordinated framework covering development, construction, commissioning, and operational management of the storage assets, supporting consistent performance within the Southeast European energy market.

Partnership context

Executive of GEN-I, Igor Koprivnikar, said that the agreement is the company’s first large-scale collaboration with SUNOTEC and covers about 200 MW of battery assets. He noted that it expands GEN-I’s storage portfolio and applies its experience in trading, optimization, and short-term algorithmic operations, contributing to regional system flexibility and efficiency.

CEO of SUNOTEC, Kaloyan Velichkov, said the agreement aligns with the company’s long-term plan to integrate energy storage into its development activities and supports its strategy of adding battery assets and establishing a consistent operational framework across European markets.
