Switzerland’s largest operational battery storage facility has been inaugurated in Gurtnellen, Canton Uri. Axpo and energieUri commissioned two co-located systems rated at 50 MW and 8.4 MW, respectively, to support renewable energy integration, grid flexibility and security of energy supply.

Axpo, Switzerland electricity producer, and energieUri have officially inaugurated two large-scale battery storage systems in Gurtnellen, Canton Uri, including what is currently Switzerland’s largest operational battery storage facility. The projects were inaugurated on 9 September 2026 at the Plattischachen industrial area.
The two battery storage facilities have been constructed close to one another at the same industrial location. Axpo’s system has an output of 50 MW, while energieUri’s facility has an output of 8.4 MW. The installations are designed to increase flexibility and stability within the energy system while supporting the integration of renewable energy.
Large-scale battery storage systems can store surplus electricity at short notice and feed it back into the grid when required. Axpo’s facility has a national focus, while energieUri developed its installation specifically around the requirements of Canton Uri. The two systems complement the existing substation of the national grid company and energieUri’s Arniberg power plant.
For energieUri, the project represents its first large-scale battery storage system and expands its energy portfolio beyond renewable generation. The company’s current projects also include the recently commissioned Uri wind farm, the first pumped-storage power plant near the Isenthal power plant, the Sidenplangg alpine photovoltaic system and the Meiental hydropower plant. energieUri is also working with Axpo on a hydrogen production plant in Bürglen.
For Axpo, the Plattischachen installation is currently the largest operational battery storage system in its portfolio. The company has been developing, building and optimising large-scale battery storage systems across Switzerland and Europe for several years.
Beyond completed projects in Switzerland and Sweden, Axpo has further battery storage facilities with a combined output of more than 300 MW under construction in France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Romania. The company is also pursuing hybrid solutions combining battery storage with photovoltaic and wind generation.
The Gurtnellen projects therefore expand operational storage capacity while strengthening the role of the Plattischachen industrial area as an energy hub supporting renewable integration and energy-system flexibility in Switzerland.
